God’s principle regarding homicide is: “If anyone sheds human blood, only by that person's blood the land shall be cleansed”. What if the blood was not shed intentionally, but accidently? According to the Law of Moses, certain cities of refuge were to be set apart so that an accidental manslayer who killed someone unintentionally could flee there. The manslayer must stay in the city; he cannot leave the city. However, there is only one chance when the manslayer will be able to leave the city of refuge and return home safely. He can do this as soon as the high priest anointed with holy oil dies. Jesus Christ is the High Priest whom God has appointed. His death brings us true freedom.
